KONGUR

kongur sudKONGUR EXPEDITION
(45-day variant Bishkek – Bishkek, Bonington Route from South-West)

Kongur (7719 m), the main summit of the Kongur-Tagh Massif, is the highest peak of the Kun-Lun Mountains. Situated in the Western Kun-Lun not far from the Karakoram Highway, the mountain is easily approached from Karakul Lake (from the south-west) but its steep snow-ice and rock slopes, ribs and ridges are very difficult and dangerous for climbing.

The first successful ascent of Kongur was done by a very strong British team of Chris Bonington in 1981. Their first attempt was done from the south-west along the South Ridge but finally they reached the summit via the Kongur Col.
